Why breakers trip, and when it is time to call an electrician

The three reasons a breaker trips, which ones you can fix yourself, and the signs that mean a Victoria electrician should look at the panel.

A tripped breaker is doing its job: cutting power before a wire overheats. Most trips are harmless and you can reset them. A few patterns are not, and those are worth a service call before they become a fire.

The three causes

Overload. Too much plugged into one circuit: a space heater and a kettle on the same kitchen counter, or a hair dryer on a bathroom circuit shared with the bedroom. The breaker trips after a few minutes of heavy use. Move the load to another circuit and it stops.

Short circuit. A hot wire touches a neutral or ground. The breaker trips instantly and hard, often with a pop, and resets only to trip again. This is a damaged cord, a failed appliance, or a problem inside a box.

Ground fault. Current leaking to ground, usually through moisture. GFCI breakers and outlets trip on this; it is common on outdoor and bathroom circuits after rain.

What you can safely do

  • Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, and plug things back in one at a time. If one appliance trips it, the appliance is the problem.
  • Press the reset button on any GFCI outlet upstream.
  • Check for a cord that is warm, pinched or damaged.

Signs it is time to call

  • The breaker trips immediately with nothing plugged in.
  • It feels hot, smells burnt, or the panel buzzes.
  • Lights dim when a big appliance starts, or flicker across the whole house.
  • You are resetting the same breaker more than once a week.
  • The panel is a brand known for failures, or it still has fuses.

What we do on a service call

We trace the circuit, test the breaker and the connections, and find the actual fault rather than swapping the breaker and hoping. If the real issue is that the house has outgrown its panel, we will tell you, and quote the upgrade separately so there is no pressure to decide on the spot. Service calls across Greater Victoria are quoted for free before we start.
